How To BBQ Safely This Season
OnWarmer weather is on the way! When the temps start rising, many people start thinking about cooking out. The anticipation of the fresh air, the taste of delicious, grilled foods, and the fun of planning a party with friends, family members, and neighbors can make everyone excited for the first cookout of the year. However, while you are planning the day, be sure to consider these safety tips so that you can have a great time without danger.
Keep Your Grill Away from the House
Move your grill at least ten feet away from your house before you start it up. You could turn your back for just a minute and, suddenly, be dealing with a house fire! This also means that you shouldn’t have the grill in any kind of covered space, like a porch or a garage.
Keep Your Grill Clean
Grease build-ups on the grill can give more fuel to a fire. Every time you use the grill, you should clean it well. Also, if this is the first time you’re using the grill this year, check it over for wasp nests before you start trying to cook on it.
Check for Gas Leaks
A gas leak could cause a tragic ending to a fun day. Check for gas leaks by using a spray bottle of soapy water that is made of half water and half dishwashing liquid. Spray the mixture on your gas hoses and connections. Turn on the gas and check to see if bubbles form on the hoses, which will indicate a leak. Don’t use the grill if you notice this happening. You can replace worn or cracked hoses or tighten connections to avoid a gas leak.
Have a Fire Extinguisher Handy
You never know what could happen when you’re dealing with an open flame. To be safe, keep a fire extinguisher handy and never leave your grill unattended, particularly if children are around. Be sure your fire extinguisher is not out of date and that you have already read the instructions for how to use it before you turn on the grill.
